Summer Solstice

This week we celebrate the Summer Solstice! The 21st of June is the first official day of summer, which means longer days to be creative, to appreciate and find inspiration in nature and more time to sew!

This week, we want to start off with a BIG THANK YOU to all of you diehard enthusiasts - both new and longtime - who have admired, celebrated and shopped our fabrics throughout the years. We love sharing our story with you through our newsletter and we hope you enjoy it too. YOU are our inspiration and it is because of you that Stonemountain has been able to continue in our community for 33 years. In great appreciation of your support we want to offer you, our devoted online followers, a special 20% off in-store and, for the first time ever, in our online store! Start your summer sewing off right by treating yourself to those new scissors you've been eyeing, or get your hands on some of our luscious linens - so breezy and cool! This is our way of giving back to you, who have given us so much.

Thank you!
Always Creatively Yours,

Suzan Steinberg,

Travel season is upon us! Whether you are journeying across the world, across the country or across town, we have the tools to create the perfect travel wardrobe with key pieces that are easy to pack and wear. No one will ever guess that you dressed out of a suitcase or weekender bag with the endless versatility and comfort that these garments provide. We're talking about tanks, tunics, and leggings. These pieces are easy to layer and can be worn from day to night with simple accessory and styling choices.

Leggings, cigarette pant, skinny jeans or slim pant - whichever style you care to wear, they will be your saving grace during travel. On the plane, in the car and through hours of museum visits and walking tours, these pants will keep you moving - as long as your fabric contains spandex or Lycra. After all of the walking and sitting and walking and sitting, non-stretch fabrics tend to sag and wrinkle in unflattering places and can leave you feeling frumpy and worn out. We love a classic black legging or slim pant, but don't be shy of playing with colors. With innumerable choices of stretch knits in our collection, this is a simple way to change up your look and add a *POP* to a limited wardrobe. Leggings and slim pants are great to wear with short dresses and tunics and can be made in a variety of fabrics to adapt to different climates.

Perhaps the most versatile and well-loved pieces of our summer wardrobe is the tank top. They are made in every conceivable color and in a wide variety of styles. Historically, the sleeveless shirt has been worn by both men and women, and really started out as an undershirt or an athletic top.
Now, they are just as functional as jeans and can be dressed up, used for layering and roll perfectly into a suitcase. Read more about Cool Summer Tanks on the Fabric Lady Blog!

Best travel fabric? Polyester. Before you cry out against this synthetic fiber keep in mind: These are not your mama's polyester! The development and quality of polyester fabric has come so far since it's debut. Come check out our selection of poly knits - a great option for travel sewing. Easy to wash and fast to dry - with no wrinkles!

Tunics are a flattering and comfortable option for layering, for day and night.
Tunics are great made up in any weight of fabric and the classic shape can transition from daytime walking tour to nighttime dinner and drinks with just a change of shoes and accessories.

Try one of these patterns for a tank or tunic.

Intrigued, but intimidate by the idea of sewing plaids? Click here to learn tips & tricks from Suzan's seamstress, Laurel, about sewing with plaids.
"Have you ever just walked by a big, bold plaid fabric and were totally intimidated? You love the colors and the way the stripes are woven together, but you know that unless you want your garment to look a sale rack reject, you are going to have to MATCH that plaid. And I agree, it can be daunting, but like the striped knit garments we made, it just takes a little extra care in the layout and you can match anything.

Try sewing a knit tank top - a quick project with fashionable and functional results!
"Showing arms for women is verboten in some parts of the world. Those who travel know that you can't even step into a church in Europe with your shoulders bared. But yay for us, we live in California, and all manner of sleeveless tops and tanks are considered acceptable attire for our warmer climate."
