Sponsoring #SewMyStyle and the Sunny Dress

Have you heard of #sewmystyle? It's a year-long sewing community challenge in which each month features a new pattern. Participants sew the pattern, adding their own spin on it if they wish, and share their creations on Instagram and Facebook. By the end of the year, participants will have made a complete handmade wardrobe while connecting with other sewists and learning some new skills along the way!

We sponsored the first month of #sewmystyle2018, which means participants received a discount on their fabric and one winner gets a $100 Stonemountain gift card! The first pattern of the year was the Sunny Dress by Friday Pattern Company, a simple t-shirt style dress or top with a scoop neck and scalloped hem. Perfect for our wide selection of bamboo rayon, stretch velvet, or soft cotton knits! We had a lot of fun sponsoring this month and seeing what everyone made.

#sewmystyle2018 Creations

Let's take a look at some of our favorites from the #sewmystyle community!

@tomkatstitcherycarmel used our Ponte Leggero in Dusty Violet (and how perfectly does it match that beautiful necklace?)
@petitepassions used Ponte Leggero too, but in the Plum color

@jessicalorraine01 kept busy this month with two Sunnies! The dress is in our St. James Stripe and the top is a bamboo rayon print.

@luverinpaige made her Sunny from Catalina cotton/spandex knit
A beautiful Sunny from @charlottewhincup in one of our favorite Art Gallery knits

This floral rayon knit is perfect on @desi_sews's Sunny

Love the cotton/lycra print that @sierraburrell picked!

@pinsandpinot used a Cotton + Steel knit – so fun! (this color is sold out, but we have it in Orchid)
And of course our own Stonemountain ladies made Sunnies too! Catherine used a striped ponte and bound the edges in bamboo rib knit and Lauren used a bamboo rayon.

To top off our sponsorship month, we invited the designer behind Friday Pattern Company to stop by the store for a meet-and-greet! Chelsea showed off her patterns and it was a great way to get to know a talented up-and-coming indie pattern designer.

We love introducing new pattern companies to sewists, especially those who are unsure of or intimidated by indie patterns. Indie companies are run by women just like us, who want something more than what's offered by the Big 4 companies. They want to support people in their sewing journey and make sewing accessible and fun for everyone – a mission that Stonemountain can definitely get behind!

How do you like to get involved in the sewing community? Do you join social media challenges like #sewmystyle or do you prefer in-person connections?

If you're an Instagrammer, we love to see and share what our customers have made! Tag #stonemountainfabric to show off what you've made with our fabric.

  1. I have introduced a perfect pattern for your Sew My Style challenges. I've been trying to reach you by email and phone for the past several weeks. The Rosita Jacket can be made from both woven and knits and is especially fantastic when made from Kantha cloth, like the ones you have been debuting on FB and Instagram. I am very interested in meeting with you in person to show off some variations of of her already assembled. I am willing and able to help with promotions and sew alongs. Please send me an email as soon as you are able so we can calendar a date and time. Thank you - Christine Groom - Owner/Designer www.zigzagdesigns.biz
